WILLIAM SHATNER MOSAIC
Print of Original Construction Paper Mosaic 33" x 48"
William Shatner Mosaic (Construction Paper Squares 33" x 48") This iconic image was created by experimenting with the mosaic process. The idea of pieces coming together to form a picture instead of painting a portrait seemed intriguing. It took 4000 construction paper squares, each square about 1 cm (almost 0.5 inch) in size, and it was a good exercise in colour use.

Being limited to only 8 solid colours really made for some tough decisions to be made to capture the likeness of William Shatner. When choosing to create a mosaic, I wasn't sure what the subject would be a first. This was when I worked for a company in Toronto that Mr. Shatner was the CEO of, and would visit from time to time.I wanted to do something identifiably iconic and knew that a portrait of Shatner would fit the bill. He was very personable and was kind enough to sign the artwork (see additional photos), which I totally appreciated. I really enjoyed the process of putting this together and how as you step further back away from the picture, the more the image pulls cohesively together and unifies the individual pieces.
