"THE PROFESSOR"
NEIL PEART TRIBUTE
By Gary O'Brien
Hundreds of hours. One extraordinary tribute to an
amazing musician. The Professor, Neil Peart.

EVERY PAINTING BEGINS WITH A STORY

FINALLY done my oil painting!!! "The Professor" — Neil Peart Tribute (oil on canvas, 24" x 36") garyobrienfineart.comAfter hundreds of hours of intense detail, countless brushstrokes, and a deep commitment to capturing every nuance, the paint has finally dried. Seeing this piece completed is an incredibly rewarding and emotional moment.
This is my tribute to the drummer, lyricist, and percussive force behind RUSH. To millions of fans around the world, Neil Peart was one of the greatest rock drummers in history. A musician whose precision, passion, and dedication earned him the legendary title of “The Professor.”
What I always admired most, however, were the rare moments when the intensity of the performer gave way to glimpses of the person behind the drums. Neil was known for his focus and professionalism on stage, so seeing those brief moments of a smile shared with his bandmates felt incredibly special. Capturing one of those moments became the heart of this painting.
As I worked on this portrait, I found myself reflecting not only on Neil’s incredible career, but also on his personal journey. The loss of his daughter was an unimaginable chapter of his life, one that he carried with remarkable strength, dignity, and resilience. It revealed another side of Neil, the person behind the music, whose life experiences shaped the depth and emotion found in his words.
During the creation of this painting, my own life took an unexpected turn. About halfway through the process, I experienced the heartbreaking loss of my daughter. I set the painting aside during that time, and it remained unfinished for nearly a year.
I never imagined that my journey would come to share this personal connection with Neil’s story. Through my own experience, I found a different understanding of the emotions behind his loss and the strength it takes to continue moving forward. That connection was never the reason for creating this painting, but it became an unexpected part of the journey.
When the time felt right, I was drawn back to this piece and felt compelled to finish it. Completing the painting became more than capturing the likeness of one of my musical heroes, it became a way of honouring Neil Peart not only as a legendary musician, but as a father, a storyteller, and a human being whose character continues to inspire so many.
My hope is that this painting honours the man behind the drums and celebrates the lasting impact Neil has had on generations of fans through his music, his words, and his life.
